SUMMARY:Beginner Bladesmithing with Joe Vachon: Forging Knives to Shape-September 21\, 2025 9am-1pm
DESCRIPTION:***PLEASE NOTE: Ticket sales will close on September 15th. If you miss the deadline\, email us at blacksmithing@cascadiaart.org and we will see if we can fit you in*** \nForge your own knife with simple tools with Joe Vachon (joetheblacksmith.com)\, a self-employed blacksmith and bladesmith since 2007\, and Season 6\, Episode 27\, Forged in Fire Champion\, in this 1 day\, hands-on course. \nIn this class we will be exploring the rudimentary hammer techniques used\, step by step\, to forge a knife blade to shape from scrap steels with very little use of a grinder. This class is centered around the clever techniques of ancient smiths melded with the minimal help of modern tools. Research the “Neo-Tribal Bladesmithing” movement and “Tai Goo” for more info on this philosophy and methodology. \nYou can expect to learn how to forge a point on the end of a bar\, flatten your blade to its final thickness with a distal taper\, create a counter-bend\, forge your bevels\, shape an all-steel handle\, clean up your work with a file and/or small grinder\, heat treat by eye\, and sharpen on a stone. \nWe will start by using mild steel for a practice knife\, then move up to high carbon steel to help your progression as a novice smith. We will also inevitably be discussing and demonstrating what goes into proper heat treating and learn about various types of blade geometry and their applications. \nWhat to wear/safety equipment : \n-Cotton pants and long sleeved shirt (synthetics are potentially flammable). \n-Leather boots (NO open toed sandals/shoes-tennis shoes are not recommended for safety). Make sure your pants fit over the tops of your boots so nothing hot can fall in. \n-Safety glasses\, ear plugs\, and a dust mask. Long hair must be tied back. \n-Leather gloves to protect your hands and a notebook to take notes. \n-Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated\, and snacks if you want. \nPLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE 5 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS IS SCHEDULED SO EVERYONE CAN GET SET UP. \n  \nSELECT NUMBER OF TICKETS NEEDED THEN “GET TICKETS”

SUMMARY:Beginner Blacksmithing with Mark Aspery: Level I (part 2) August 13th & 14th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Level II final project – Gate latch \nThe project consists of the tapered staple\, the latch and the keep. Hot forged. \nPLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE 10 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS IS SCHEDULED SO EVERYONE CAN GET SET UP. \n \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Mark Aspery: \nI currently own and operate my own school for blacksmiths in California\, USA. My training as a smith began after leaving high-school in the UK\, after starting work at a small fabrication & engineering firm that boasted a blacksmith shop. Over the years\, I have worked for several smiths\, as well as teaching in trade schools. \nA certified journeyman smith with the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths\, and currently an Associate of the company (AWCB); I’m also a certified farrier with the American Farriers Association (AFA). Although I maintain that these qualifications and a Dollar/Pound will only get you a cup of pretty-poor tasting coffee/tea\, but that the endeavors were priceless. \nCurrently\, I’m writing a fourth volume in my ‘How to’ blacksmith book series\, “The Skills of a Blacksmith”. I’m careful not to call myself a traditional smith\, perhaps classical is a more apt phrase. I do not take any regular commission work\, just the occasional small job\, I am quite out-of-touch with that side of the profession\, but I have put of lot of effort into teaching blacksmithing\, and that is how I am known in the profession. \nI’m as much a student of blacksmithing as the next smith\, and always ready to learn more\, taking classes where and when I can; with a subject this vast\, how can I say anything else.

SUMMARY:Beginner Blacksmithing with Dan Partin: Simple Padlock July 13\, 2025 9am to 3pm
DESCRIPTION:Come play with hot metal\, it’s fun. Dan has been a hobby blacksmith for more than a handful of\nyears. His background is in science\, but now is doing mostly smithing. He was on the “Ramblin’\nRod” television show twice and failed to win the smile contest either going. He’s not bitter at all\nabout that. You can see some of Dan’s work (and pictures of cute dogs and pizza) here.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/gunterhausfrau/\nDan is offering two stand alone classes on this weekend\, but a student could be encouraged to take both. The padlock class is more\nof a guided workshop\, so if you are new and can only take one\, we would suggest Class 1-Coat hanger. \nThe main project for this class will be making a simple blacksmith’s lock. This is not a complicated lock with wards and\nall\, but a simple screw locking mechanism. Very traditional\, though there is room to be as\ncreative as you wish. This will involve some fairly simple blacksmithing\, hacksaw work\, drilling\nand tapping. Nothing too precise. If you’re willing to swing a hammer and use a saw\, you can do\nthis project. \nWhat to wear/safety equipment : \n-Cotton pants and long sleeved shirt (synthetics are potentially flammable). \n-Leather boots (NO open toed sandals/shoes-tennis shoes are not recommended for safety). SUMMARY:Beginner Blacksmithing with Dan Partin: Coat Hanger July 12\, 2025 9am to 3pm
DESCRIPTION:Come play with hot metal\, it’s fun. Dan has been a hobby blacksmith for more than a handful of years. His background is in science\, but now is doing mostly smithing. He was on the “Ramblin’ Rod” television show twice and failed to win the smile contest either going. He’s not bitter at all about that. You can see some of Dan’s work (and pictures of cute dogs and pizza) here.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/gunterhausfrau/\nThere are two stand alone classes from Dan this weekend\, but a student could be encouraged to take both. Class 2: Blacksmiths padlock is more of a guided workshop\, so if you are new and can only take one\, I would suggest Class 1; Coat Hanger. \nThe main project for this class will be a coat hanger. Sounds simple\, but it does capture many of the basic skills of blacksmithing. Material management\, drawing out\, isolating material\, making an aesthetic curl\, punching a hole\, symmetry\, etc. \n-Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated\, and lunch/snacks if you want. \nPLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE 30 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS IS SCHEDULED SO EVERYONE CAN GET SET UP. \n  \nSELECT NUMBER OF TICKETS NEEDED THEN “GET TICKETS”

SUMMARY:Beginner Bladesmithing: Forging Knives to Shape-June 29\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Forge your own knife with simple tools with Joe Vachon (joetheblacksmith.com)\, a self-employed blacksmith and bladesmith since 2007\, and Season 6\, Episode 27\, Forged in Fire Champion\, in this 1 day\, hands-on course. SUMMARY:Monotype Nature Printing with a Gelli Plate 2-day Class with Anji Grainger
DESCRIPTION:Sign up through Eventbrite \nAnji Grainger will teach you to use nature to create beautiful imprints on paper & other surfaces. A gel plate is a great way to make natural eco-prints & in this 2-day course\, you learn ways to layer & build our natural prints. A strong emphasis in composition & design is included. Leaves\, bark\, flowers\, grasses & feathers as well as bubble wrap\, string & anything that leaves a pattern\, all work well with this process. \nClasses will be from 9:30 am to 3 pm Thursday and Friday. We will be looking at using nature to create beautiful imprints on paper and other surfaces. Included will be lots of tips and tricks to use when creating at home. We will have a lunch break each day. \nThe class is held at the Cascadia Center for Arts & Crafts which has an altitude of 3\,914′\, so be sure to bring a water bottle and a sweater! \nNature Printing Supply List \nItems you need to bring: \nOne gel plate Any size will work but I recommend no smaller than 6” x 6” \n• One piece of plexiglass slightly larger than the size of your plate \n• Acrylic paint in tubes: various colors (you will need one tube of white and one tube of black) \n• Brayer \n• Palette knife \n• Roll of paper towels \n• A round watercolor brush – medium in size and a liner brush \n• A few watercolor paints to add depth at the end. \n• A water container \n• Micron pens – white and black (optional) \n• Fresh plant materials that you gather each morning from your garden or on a walk. This can be done each day before class. Note\, wilted plants can be difficult to work with so fresh is better. Plants that work well: \n• Grasses \n• Leaves with lots of veins \n• Flowers with flat or small centers \n• Anything with lots of visual texture \n• Other natural options: \n• Flat stones \n• Moss \n• Feathers \n• Two water containers \n• Assorted papers and surfaces. \nPaper Suggestions: \n• Hot-press Watercolor paper \n• Drawing paper \n• Any smooth printing papers \nAdditional items you may want to bring: \n•Tissue paper.  Any kind you might have lying around the house.  We will use this for patterning as well as lifting. \n•Deli paper\, if you have it.  I will have a small amount that I will bring\, but I was thinking that some of you may like to make collage papers and deli paper works great. \n•Plain copy paper – the kind you have in your printer. \nIf you have craft stamps and stencils at home\, bring those.  We can build layers with stamps. Anything else lying around that you think might make a pattern.  Perhaps\, think outside the box.
