SUMMARY:Forged Bamboo Desk Lamp
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Blacksmithing Workshop\nInstructor: Joe Elliot \nThis two-day workshop focuses on designing and forging a sculptural desk lamp inspired by the form and growth of bamboo. The class is geared toward students with intermediate forging skills who are ready to combine traditional hand forging with light fabrication techniques. \nOver the course of two 6-hour days\, students will complete a fully functional forged steel desk fixture\, including a wired socket and base. \n  \nSkills Covered\nParticipants will deepen their skills in both forging and fabrication\, including: \n\nForging controlled tapers and organic forms\nUpsetting and isolating material for bamboo “nodes”\nHot piercing and shaping irregular openings\nRiveting and mechanical assembly\nForging and texturing leaf forms\nBasic fabrication techniques: \n\nDrilling\nTapping\nWelding (MIG or stick\, depending on shop setup)\n\n \nLayout and proportional design for functional objects\nBasic lamp wiring and socket installation\n\n  \n  \nMaterials & Construction\nStudents will work with the following materials: \n\n3/8” steel plate for the base\n3/8” round stock for forged leaves\n3/4” Schedule 40 pipe for the bamboo stalk\n\nLamp socket and wiring components (provided) \n\n\nThe project emphasizes intentional surface texture\, clean joinery\, and thoughtful transitions between forged and fabricated elements. \n  \nFinished Project\nBy the end of the class\, each student will leave with: \n\nA completed forged steel desk lamp\nA deeper understanding of combining sculptural forging with functional design\n\nPractical experience integrating electrical components \n\n\n  \nSchedule\nAugust 12th & 13\, 2026 from 9am to 4pm \n\nDay 1: Forging the bamboo stalk\, nodes\, leaves\, and base components\nDay 2: Piercing\, riveting\, fabrication\, welding\, final assembly\, and wiring\n\n
