Cascadia Center For Arts & Crafts
Connecting Community with Art
Class description: The hammer is a fundamental tool for a blacksmith. Historically journeymen would show their knowledge and skill by making a hammer. In this intermediate level blacksmithing class, students will learn how to identify scrap steel with spark testing. Also, layout, punching and shaping of a hammer of their chosen style, as well as finishing, heat treating and putting a handle on the completed hammer. Students will take home a completed hammer of their own making.
Class Structure: This class has a special “flavor” in that Stephen stresses the importance of camaraderie among artists. The “campfire” and “table” aspects are key pieces of an artist community. Friday afternoon/evening is an optional part of the class where students can all meet up and discuss ideas about the class, projects, their experiences. Saturday will start at 9am with a full day of hands on blacksmithing. Sunday morning there will be the option to do any finishing work on your hammer. There is also an optional catered meal that can be discussed with the instructor.
Meet the Instructor: Stephen is a self taught artist blacksmith with 30+ years experience in Architectural metalwork. I incorporate traditional forged joinery with cast copper, bronze and pewter components and am inspired by nature. http://www.forgedatdawn.com
